Quartz Halogen Heaters Installed at Croxley School of Dance in Watford, London London

Project Type

Performance-Space Heating

The Project

The Croxley School of Dance has been providing dance lessons in Watford since 2006.  It caters for babies and toddlers, children up to 18 and adults, providing lessons in ballet, tap, jazz and even hip hop.

Recently, the owners asked a local contractor to provide an economic heating system for their rehearsal space.  In turn, the contractor arranged for a BN Thermic engineer to visit site, carry out a survey and provide a proposal.

The ability to control each lamp individually saves money and is unique to BN Thermic

The Owner’s Requirements

The rehearsal space measures approximately 8m x 10m with a ceiling height reaching 6m at its highest point.  The use of the space is both irregular and intermittent and the owners did not want to waste valuable resources maintaining a warm studio when it was not in use.  Their preference was for a heating system that provided comfort heat instantly at the push of a button.

The owners also requested that the heaters be mounted at high level allowing completely free use of wall and floor space.

The Benefits of Halogen Heaters

BN Thermic proposed a heating system using halogen heaters.  Their recommendation was that four quartz halogen heaters should be suspended in an evenly spaced grid at 3.5m above floor level.  Halogen heaters heat people directly without the need to build up and maintain a body of warm air and provide effective heating immediately they are switched on.

These two features ensured that the Croxley School of Dance only needed to activate the heating system when the rehearsal space was in use, thus keeping electricity consumption to an absolute minimum.

Quartz halogen heaters are instantly effective making them ideal for sporadically used premises like the Dance School

BN Thermic’s MC-1 control system allows you to switch multiple halogen heater lamps easily from a single point

Halogen Heater Control

BN Thermic halogen heaters are designed to allow their heat intensity to be adjusted using a simple, wall-mounted switch.

The heaters installed at the Croxley School of Dance had a maximum output of 4.5kW but this could be reduced to 3kW or 1.5kW when required.  Rather than install four switches with each controlling an individual heater, BN Thermic proposed the use of a control box which allowed all four heaters to be controlled from a single point.  This style of control improves both comfort and energy efficiency.

A Successful Project

A few weeks after installation, we had a call from the contractor confirming that the owners of the Croxley School of Dance were delighted with the heating system both in terms of effectiveness and economy.

A successful halogen heating system will provide an even spread of radiant across the target area, a comfortable level of heat intensity and appropriate control devices to ensure comfort and economy.  The engineers at BN Thermic have been designing this type of scheme for many years and are always available to discuss your heating requirements.

By switching a lamp off in each heater you are reducing your energy consumption by 33%
