The Project

Snickers Workwear is one of the world’s largest workwear manufacturers with locations all over the UK. This project was carried out by Chris Beeney and his team at Juice Electrical Services at one of their locations on the South Coast.

The brief behind this project was simple – keep workers warm within a busy distribution centre whilst keeping running costs to a minimum. Here’s how it all unfolded.

Heating Distribution Centres

Distribution centres always tend to be large buildings full of products, racking and a handful of workers at workstations. Space heating distribution centres with large fan heaters are usually impractical and costly as vast sections of the building do not require heating.

The most cost-effective method of keeping staff warm is to spot-heat individual workstations with quartz halogen heaters.

The Solution – Quartz Halogen Heaters

Quartz halogen heaters heat people directly and do not warm the surrounding air. This means you can focus the heaters over a workstation and heat a specific worker. As the heaters are instantly effective, there is no warm-up time required which keeps running costs to a minimum.

On a standard energy tariff of 15p p/kWh, a 1.5kW quartz halogen heater costs 22p an hour to run!

The Installation

Chris and the team at Juice Electrical Services did an excellent job with the installation. The main area they focused on was the order input station which usually has two workers present. Two 1.5kW quartz halogen heaters were installed over the station and controlled via a 2-gang switch and a dimer.

The switch allows the end user to energise the heaters when a station is occupied thus keeping running costs to a minimum.

The dimmer reduces the output of the heaters which is great for keeping staff comfortable in the warmer months. All in all it’s an economic system designed for easy use in a busy industrial environment.
