The Project
In this case study we look at an industrial space heating project installed by our friends at Alan Benfield Electrical Contractors. Their client is a plastic bottle manufacturer and required a new heating system in two large adjoining warehouses. The areas have staff and stock moving around so a comfort ambient temperature was required throughout. The client was currently renting two large gas heaters which were costly to run and, given their environment, were a potential safety risk.
Alan Benfield’s brief was very simple – design and supply an efficient, hard wired electric heating system that would keep staff and product at a desired temperature. Here’s how it all unfolded.

The Specification
The warehouses are typical uninsulated buildings made of breeze blocks and both had very high ceilings. Given the size of both areas, it was important to get our heat calculations correct and to make sure we had enough air circulation to spread the heat around. Here is what Colin from our design team specified:

The Solution – Industrial Fan Heaters
We specified our OUH industrial fan heaters in both areas to provide comfort heat throughout. These units are hand assembled in the UK and backed with a 5 year warranty. The installers at Alan Benfield neatly wall mounted the heaters at 2.5m ensuring wall space was kept free throughout both areas.
These units have built-in contactors meaning they can be daisy chained and easily wired up to one controller. In this case, we specified a 7-day programmable thermostat in each warehouse which keeps running costs to a minimum and allows the end user to pre-warm the warehouses before staff arrive.

The Solution – Destratification Units
Given the high ceilings in both areas (6.5 and 9.5m), destratification units were crucial for the systems to work and to ensure running costs were kept to a minimum. As we all know, hot air rises and will naturally escape through ceilings which is commonly referred to as ‘heat loss’. A destratification unit is designed to push warm air downwards before it gets a change to escape which can save up to 30% off a heating bill!
Given the electrical load of the two areas, the payback on the destratification fans will be incredibly quick. These units were again neatly installed equidistant on the ceiling in both warehouses.
