Ceiling Fan Heater Installed in a Set Design Studio London
Project Type
Studio Heating
The Project
For this project, we were tasked with heating a railway arch occupied by a company that builds props and set designs for the TV, film and theatre industries. The studio is used very infrequently and various tasks are carried out including carpentry, sculpting and upholstery.
We needed to design a heating system that would free up wall space, assist with drying and provide user-friendly control (as the space is often rented out for events).
The Requirements
Wall space was at a premium in the compact studio, so any heating system we designed would have to be ceiling-mounted. Plus, air movement was required to assist with drying.
The studio is in a typical East London railway arch which is cold, uninsulated and often has a train running over the top. The main entrance is also a single pain, so there is high heat loss.
Our design would have to be well calculated to outweigh the high heat loss and get the studio to a desired temperature. Also, as the studio is used intermittently, we needed to make sure it warmed up quickly as vast pre-warming was not always an option.
The Design and Specification
We specified 2 x 6kW surface mount fan heaters to be suspended equidistant. These would be controlled via a pair of switches and a pair of room thermostats.
We toyed with using a radiant heater but went with fan heaters as air movement helps the drying process. 12kWs in the area is slightly over-specified as it equates to 166W/m2, but it means the studio will get to temperature quicker. (ideal for its intermittent use)
The Heaters
The 6kW surface mount fan heaters specified are hand assembled in the UK and are made of a tough steel casing (ideal for accidentally knocks).
The threaded holes on the back make them very easy to suspend and install.
The Controls
The control system had to be simple as the studio is intermittently used by various staff members and often rented out to third parties. Each heater was therefore wired to a room thermostat and a switch.
The switch gives the end user easy on/off/high/low/fan settings and the thermostats will keep the studio at the desired temperature.
The Final Project
The installation was carried out very professionally and the staff at the studio were very happy with the heaters’ output. The white casing is also pretty unobtrusive which is great as the studio is often decorated for events.
We design heating systems for any commercial or industrial application. Please contact BN Thermic on 01293 547 361 to discuss a project.
