Quartz Halogen Heaters Installed in a Bike Shop in South London London

The Project
After finding BN Thermic on Twitter, Aaron Fleming-Saheed a.k.a. The Cycling Sparks called us as he was tasked with keeping staff warm at a busy bike shop in South London. Now in his 5th year of business as The Cycling Sparks, Aaron has been tackling London traffic and pollution by cycling to all his jobs all over town. BN Thermic staff were instantly intrigued by this project as there can’t be many tradesmen in the UK with a smaller carbon footprint than Aaron!
Aaron’s customer, The Bike Project, is a bustling bike repair shop and registered charity based in a typically cold London railway arch. Their premises is large and has several workstations where staff members spend the majority of their time. The brief was simple – keep the staff warm and keep running costs to a minimum.
Current Heating Issues
The Bike Project had been using plug-in oil filled radiators to space heat the premises but staff were finding them inefficient. Space heating is a term for a heating system that builds and maintains a warm body of air within a room/premises. When space heating a premises like The Bike Project, the sheer amount of heat loss through the door and uninsulated walls make this method costly and impractical.
Any heat produced by a space heater will naturally find the coldest part of the premises which, in their case, is not where the staff work. Also, the electrical load of the plug-in heaters were playing havoc with th

The Solution
The only viable solution were shortwave quartz halogen heaters which provide instant comfort heat with zero warm up time. Shortwave heaters heat people directly, not surrounding air, and using this technology is often referred to as ‘spot heating’. Spot heating occupied work stations allows you to keep staff warm and ignore the parts of the premises that do not require heating. This subsequently keeps running costs to an absolute minimum.
Also, as shortwave heaters do not warm surrounding air, there is no heat loss when the front door is opened on a cold day.
Lamp Technology
BN Thermic specified 4 x 3kW magic lamp quartz halogen heaters to be suspended over each workstation. Magic lamps give off the same ‘punchy’ shortwave heat as a standard lamp but do not give off the red glow usually associated with this style of heater.
Zero glare magic lamps were ideal for the staff as their vision would not be impaired if they looked upwards towards a heater whilst fixing a bike.
Quartz halogen heaters are instantly effective making them ideal for heating intermittently used work stations
Quartz halogen heaters can be suspended up out the way which frees up valuable wall space
A Successful Project
The project was a big success and a member of The Bike Project called the new heaters ‘game changers’! Big thanks to Aaron for his hard work and for taking some photos of the finished project.
